Iconic to Melbourne since its establishment in 1863, Studley Park Boathouse has been given a new lease of life. This hidden gem, facilitating the community of picnic goers, hikers and boaters, adding to its list; restaurant and event space.

Visual Builders along with Burton + Carter transformed this locale into a more interconnected river experience maintaining the regulars as well as drawing in a more youthful crowd. Zoning was integral to the build creating spaces that set functional recreational arenas with sweeping balconies over the river.

Along the sloped entrance to the boathouse, you are greeted by an enclosed arbour accompanied by its own picnic area with open fireplace. A children’s play space and bike station dwells the upward slope to your left. Gliding over the river is a balcony that extends to the terraced dining arena. This terrace encompasses four levels that provide panoramic views of the Yarra River. The former kiosk operates as the new bar and restaurant; accessorised with a new pizza bar complete with stone pizza oven and vintage camper ice creamery. All of which, congregates to the central dining area that is laden with bar seating, elegant lamp posts and integrated heated umbrellas.

The Edwardian building maintained its external structure with a fresh coat of paint and had internal changes for an updated restaurant and function room with its own tavern.

Identified with a heritage overlay, this build presented with its own challenges, having special consideration to the original Edwardian House and the surrounding cultural heritage significance. Careful consideration during the construction process was necessary in the sensitivity of the local flora and fauna.

Quintessential to Melbourne’s identity, Studley Park Boathouse has successfully achieved a revitilisation that is respectful both to its history and its surroundings. It has been a build that has certainly drawn many eyes to its progress. We hope it continues to draw people from all over to appreciate this river bend eatery affair.
