Sedgers Reef Hotel has been serving its local publicans for over a century and remains the oldest operating business in the area. Having survived two fires in its time, this favourite watering hole has been upgraded to a sleek modern nautical build.

Typical of a build predating mid-century, this seaside weatherboard structure had undergone several renovation additions with asbestos clad roof and walls. Primarily constructed from asbestos, this proved to be challenging during demolition, all while still able to recycle unaffected materials… Ninety percent of which we were able to recycle!

Additionally given the nature of its remote location and council regulations, further challenges presented with constructing a fully serviced road to the hotel. A car park to facilitate, and complete build and install of all services to the hotel before any structural construct. Whilst maintaining the existence of sensitive landscaped trees.

Constructed from shipping containers, a temporary bar was built to service the local patrons in the meantime.

Key aspects to the brief from client were to use as much local trades, services and materials as possible. The community trades and services were very accommodating and proactive in the process, making it a smooth sailing (yes pun intended!) build.

Fronting Clarence River, it was impeccable that the new hotel design considered this view in its aesthetic. Catering for many scenarios from the local anglers, publicans and even wedding nuptials. The hotel provided areas for seaside engagement with its outdoor seating, a bistro on the west wing with bar that extends out to a courtyard. Architectural trusses that characterise the skylight. A central vaulted foyer that connects all rooms. A sports bar to its east wing facilitated with TAB and pokies to its rear. Complete with a barman’s relocatable cottage.

Featured in the local Clarence Valley Independent, it’s safe to say both clients and locals have received our finished product astoundingly well.
