Youth charity Kids Under Cover returned to the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show (MIFGS) this year to host their sixth annual Cubby House Challenge.

The challenge brings together builders, designers and decorators to create highly creative bespoke cubby houses, which are then auctioned off to raise funds to prevent youth homelessness. Kids Under Cover is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to keeping young people safe and off the streets. Their Cubby House Challenge will raise funds for their unique studio accommodation and scholarship and mentor programs, which have proven to keep families together and engage younger people in the community.

The VARDO HUT, designed by Doherty Design Studio and built by Visual Builders, took out the People’s Choice Award and sold for a pretty cool $9000. Half traditional gypsy wagon (or, in gypsy language, vardo) and half treehouse-esque loft, the design has utilised common garden materials, plus ledges and mesh for growing plants, to integrate the structure into the backyard. The cubby has featured in multiple publications and on-line interior design sites. To check out more of what this great charity does click on the following link http://www.kuc.org.au/
